Salt: It's Everywhere

When we read about salt it is always in terms of mg (milligrams). Did you know that the recommended daily limit of salt is 2,300 milligrams = 1 teaspoon?

What is considered a low sodium serving? Answer: < 140 milligrams/serving
What is considered a moderate sodium serving? Answer: < 400 milligrams/serving
High sodium serving? Answer: > 400 milligrams.

Interesting salt fact #1: The average American consumes 4,000 milligrams of salt/day.
Interesting salt fact #2: 5% of sodium is added during cooking.
Interesting salt fact #3: 6% comes from the salt shaker at the table.
Interesting salt fact #4: 12% occurs naturally in food.
Interesting salt fact #5: 77% comes in courtesy of processed and prepackaged foods.

With WellMeals4U we work hard to create recipes that have no hidden salts. Items that we find hard to avoid that do contain "hidden" salt include: soy sauce, broth, salsa and canned beans. Cured pork is terribly high in salt (this is a of course a crying shame) and we try to use it in recipes sparingly. In our household we eat a lot of beans and rice. So it makes sense for us to buy dried beans in bulk and then pressure cook them for our dishes. We also try to make/buy fresh salsa and use only low salt soy sauce.
